Writing instruction will include:
Students will review and practice the Writing Process throughout the year and will conference with me about their writing at least once per month. A variety of writing assignments will be given to assess their learning.
Weekly, students should expect to have written assignments connected to their reading. These may include single-paragraph short responses or essays that synthesize their new knowledge with prior knowledge or real-world connections. Students should also get into the habit of answering questions (both written and oral) with complete sentences.
Monthly, students will have projects that will require different writing skills. Examples include book projects and research projects. Students will complete their STEM project in the first semester, in which research and the final paper will be assessed in ELA (in addition to the Science grade). Students also complete a biography project in the second semester that connects ELA and Social Studies. Book projects will be given throughout the year to assess not only writing and reading standards, but also standards for grammar, speaking and listening.
Quarterly, students will complete a writing assessment to be included in their portfolio. These assess student proficiency in the primary writing formats from elementary school - persuasive/opinion, informative/expository, narrative/descriptive, and letters.
In addition, the 2018 NC ELA standards bring cursive writing back into the expected skills that elementary students should master. Students will have weekly cursive practice throughout the year in the classroom and should expect some cursive homework, but the amount will be determined as we move through the year.
Most writing homework will be integrated into weekly reading assignments. Please check both the tab for this page and the homework tab for Reading to see if writing homework has been assigned. Furthermore, to meet 21st Century technology standards, students should also expect in-class and/or at-home online writing assignments. Please let me know if you do not have internet access at home so I can make other arrangements for your child when these assignments are given.
