Week of 04 March:
This week will see a return to vocabulary homework, while continuing with our grammar instruction. We are beginning Unit 5 in reading - Poetry. Students should expect to see an increase in independent practice (aka, homework) for the remainder of the year. Reminders: Students will be MAP testing Monday and Tuesday mornings this week - Signed Progress Reports were due Friday (03/01); please return those on Monday if you have not already - Friday is an Early Release Day (lunch will not be served). Week of 26 November:
There will be a reading/grammar quiz on Friday (11/30), as well as a science quiz and the Native American projects are due. Thursday, 11/29 is our second Skate Night of this year. Please come out and support this 5th grade fundraiser for the DC field trip. It will be held at Skateland North (on N Church St in Greensboro) from 6:30-8:30 pm. Second Quarter Progress Reports will go home next week. Week of 05 November:
Students will be taking the NC Check Ins for Reading and Math on Wednesday and Thursday of this week. Questions on these assessments are closely aligned with NC EoG tests, but they will be assessing the standards covered in first quarter. Signed report cards are due Wednesday, 11/07 Yankee Candle orders are due by Friday, 11/09 Friday, 11/09 is Good Conduct Dress Down. Students who are ineligible will be notified and parents will be notified through Dojo and email. Monday, 11/12 is a holiday (Veteran's Day) - No School We have corrected the problem with Class Dojo not sending negative points to parents, however, parents will need to use the new codes sent home Monday (11/05) to reconnect to the class. We apologize for the inconvenience, but this was the only way to correct the problem. Please see the content pages for this week's homework assignments. Week of 29 October:
Students will take their Unit 1 Assessment this week in ELA. We will be reviewing in class on Tuesday and Wednesday. The test will be broken into 2 parts - the first will be given on Thursday and must be finished within the allotted time. The second half will be given on Friday. Students will NOT have vocabulary this week in order to prepare for the unit test. Two review packets will be assigned as homework. Due to the size of the packets, these will not be available online. Also note that the reading requirement for second quarter is 120 minutes per week. Reminder - Friday is the deadline for turning in the green form and deposit for the DC field trip. Next Friday, Nov 9th is the deadline for turning in the Yankee Candle orders. Money for that fundraiser is collected when items are delivered. Please collect $1 per order (not per item) from your customers placing a catalog order to cover shipping. Online orders will have shipping directly added when customers check out. TMSA will be open for students on Tuesday, Nov 6th; NC Check-In testing will take place Nov 7-8. Week of 22 October:
Students will be comparing persuasive articles this week, looking at facts and opinions as evidence to support an author's point of view. Students should also use this strategy to help them research their STEM topic for their paper. In vocabulary, students will need to complete 40 points of word work again this week. In grammar/writing, we will be working on correcting fragments and run-on sentences and properly combining simple sentences in order to vary sentence structure and improve writing. Grammar homework should be expected on Tuesday and Wednesday nights this week. On the Writing page, please see the links to help students with APA formatting, which is expected for their STEM papers. We will have the story quiz AND vocab quiz on Friday this week. Reminder - No School on Monday, 29 Oct (Teacher Workday). Week of 15 October:
Students should now be working on their STEM Fair projects. Please see the packet sent home for deadlines and expectations. We will be working on research, writing and citing sources this week and next during ELA. You will see less grammar homework, but students will still need to complete their reading logs (100 minutes per week) and their vocabulary work (definitions and word work) in addition to the writing assignments. Please help your child with their project by asking questions, proofreading their work and checking their sources. The STEM project is required of all 5th grade students and counts as a major project grade (40%) in both Science and ELA, as well as a math grade for their calculations. Do not give in to the temptation to help with their projects. The main goal is INQUIRY, not an "A" on something they already know. |

Week of 01 October:
Friday is first quarter Conference Day. We will be releasing more time slots this week to accommodate all families. Please use the Sign Up Genius link sent by email to set a conference appointment. We need to meet with the parent/guardians of every student this round, so please help us by being on time for your conference and do not come in on Friday if you do not have a conference scheduled. We will have additional times so everyone has a scheduled time - right now we have NO available time on Friday. Students were given the STEM Fair packets today (10/01). They need to have these with them for classes this week to discuss the expectations and deadlines. Please review the packets and all dates with your child. Projects are mandatory for all 5th grade students and will count as a major project grade in multiple subject areas. The project is broken down into graded sections to help your child stay on target for the final deadline. Signed Progress Reports are now past due. Please sign and return those if you have not done so already. Week of 24 September:
There is an Early Release scheduled for Friday, 09/28/18. Students will dismiss at 10:50 AM; lunch will not be served. Any assignments due on Friday will be collected during arrival. Reading logs for next week will be passed out on Thursday. Please see the Testing Calendar page for updates. * Progress Reports were sent home on 09/26.
