"Everyone is a reader...some just haven't found their favorite book yet."
Each week students will have reading homework. They are required to read 100 minutes per week. I do not care how they divide that up, just that they read! My suggestion is 25 minutes per day Monday - Thursdays, however I realize that families have other obligations during the week that may make such a schedule unrealistic. I do not specifically assign homework over the weekends, but the students quickly figured out that if I would provide their reading log on Fridays, they could "bank" time over the weekends toward their weekly totals.
The reading log contains spaces for students to list the author, title and pages or chapters read each day. They are welcome to use the same book for several days, but must use new selections within that book (so, they can't re-read chapter 1 all week). There is a space for students to write a summary of what they read, then record the number of minutes they read, followed by boxes for both the student and a parent/guardian to initial. Most of the time students will be allowed to use material of their choice. From time to time, however, they may have specific assignments to be read.
I ask students to be honest about their effort - please support this request at home by not signing off on minutes that are not reasonable. I will initial Logs for students who read during dismissal at school, if you prefer. Over the course of the year, the required amount of reading time will increase in order to help students build stamina before the EOG. The Summary section should contain at least 3 sentences that adequately summarize what happened in the section read for that day. Below I am including a copy as well as a link for you to download the reading log , for your convenience.
