"Take care that you never spell a word wrong. Always before you write a word, consider how it is spelled, and, if you do not remember, turn to a dictionary." Thomas Jefferson
Students will have vocabulary homework Monday-Thursday each week. The same assignments will be used throughout the year in order to practice spelling, building vocabulary and reinforcement of specific academic words (from other subjects). Students will be graded weekly on their vocabulary journals, which are to be turned in at the beginning of class on Fridays. As with their reading homework, they may pace their assignments in a way that fits their schedules, but all work is due before testing on Fridays. Word lists will be posted on Mondays. Students will be responsible for recording the vocabulary words for the week in their journals before leaving class that day. Please help me reinforce the importance of their responsibility for their own work.
Each Monday students are to define the vocabulary words for that week. Definitions should include the word, the part(s) of speech and all definitions for that word. Definitions are due at the beginning of their first ELA class on Tuesday. Students will have until Friday morning to complete their OWL activities. These are given in a menu format (see below) and students will have their choice of activities to complete, but the activities must total 30 points for the week. Activities cannot be repeated within the same week, but students may choose to use the same activities from week to week. Vocabulary journals should be going home each night in order to complete their daily homework assignments.
Vocabulary quizzes will be given each week on Friday (unless otherwise indicated) and will cover the spelling and definitions of the words.
